Prof Mark Gorrell

Professor Mark Gorrell PhD leads the Liver Enzymes in Metabolism and Inflammation Research Program at Centenary Institute, is Professor of Liver Science in The University of Sydney and is attached to the Gastroenterology and Liver Centre of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He trained at Australian National University, University of Melbourne and Johns Hopkins University.

His research focusses upon chronic liver disease pathogenesis, and the science and medical applications of the proteases DPP4, DPP9, DPP8 and fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP). He has authored more than 180 publications attracting over 11,000 citations.

His scientific discoveries are important in the development of DPP4-targeted drugs for type 2 diabetes, in discovering the importance of DPP9 in inflammation and the health outcomes of DPP9 deficiency, in visualising liver collagen using the second harmonic of light and the significance of FAP in fibrosis.
