A/Prof John Lubel

 John is a consultant Gastroenterologist at The Alfred and Epworth Private Hospitals and has an academic appointment with Monash University. He studied medicine at King’s College Hospital, London prior to arriving in Australia in 2001 and completed advanced training at the Victorian Liver Transplant Centre and completed a PhD examining the role of the renin angiotensin system (RAS) and ACE2 in liver disease. ACE2 was later identified as the primary binding site for SARS-CoV-2.  

John is a current executive Board Member of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA) and past executive of the Liver Faculty. He was lead author of the Australian Consensus Guidelines on Hepatocellular Carcinoma and National consensus guidelines on the management of hepatitis B and an author of the 2025 Assessment of MAFLD in Primary Care consensus statement. John has been an invited speaker to European, Asian, and Australasian conferences, and has more than 250 peer reviewed journal articles and conference abstracts.
