Dr Abdelmounem E Abdo
Dr. Abdelmounem E. Abdo is a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Ibn Sina Gastroenterology Centre in Khartoum, Sudan, with a specialization in interventional gastroenterology. His primary areas of interest include hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), portal hypertension, ERCP, and small bowel endoscopy.
He serves as the Director of the National Centre for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases and the Director of the World Gastroenterology Training Centre in Khartoum. He is also the Vice President of the Sudanese Society of Gastroenterology, Secretary General of the Pan Arab Association of Gastroenterology, and a past president of the African and Middle East Association of Gastroenterology.
Dr Abdo has been at the forefront of Sudan’s hepatitis eradication strategy through collaborative efforts between the National Centre for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, the Federal Ministry of Health, the Department of Infectious Disease Control, and the World Health Organization (WHO).
He also led the establishment of the Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, and Liver Transplantation Centre in Khartoum. This pioneering initiative, supported by the Sudan Federal Ministry of Health and funded with a $2.5 million donation from Sudanese philanthropist Mr. Mohamed Salih Idris, provides advanced treatment and training for Sudan and neighboring African countries. The center successfully completed its first two liver transplants in July and October 2022.
Despite the ongoing conflict in Sudan, Dr. Abdo has played a critical role in sustaining gastroenterology services across several regions in the country, ensuring continued care amid crisis.
He received prestigious Ali Fadul Award from Sudanese Physician American Association for his contribution to health services in Sudan
