Prof Barry Marshall
Professor Barry Marshall, Nobel Laureate and Western Australia Life Science Ambassador, is an Emeritus Clinical Professor at The University of Western Australia (UWA). In 2005, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with the late Professor J. Robin Warren for their groundbreaking discovery of Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. This landmark finding transformed the understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal health worldwide.
After returning to UWA from the United States in 1996, Professor Marshall’s career continued to flourish. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998, awarded the Order of Australia in 2007, and became a Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2008. His contributions to global health have also been recognised in China, where he received the Chinese Academy of Engineering Award (2011), the China Friendship Award (2015), and the Chinese International Science and Technology Cooperation Award in June 2024.
Currently, Professor Marshall leads 7 advanced medical research centres—one in Perth and six across China—focused on pioneering research in infectious diseases. These centres utilise genomic analysis and next-generation sequencing to develop innovative diagnostics and treatment strategies. Under his leadership, they have become global leaders in infectious disease research, fostering international collaboration and driving transformative breakthroughs in medical science.
Through his dedication and visionary approach, Professor Marshall continues to shape the future of medical research, advancing global understanding and treatment of infectious diseases.
